The charming Owego is worth a short detour, for example on a trip from New York to Niagara Falls. It reminded our author Anna Wengel (now Chiodo) of her favorite series. She has written a small Owego tips list for TRAVELBOOK.
Owego is a small town in Tioga County in Upstate New York. Gilmore Girls fans may also recognize the resemblance to the series town of Stars Hollow. If not as the only destination, Owego is definitely an excellent stopover when coming from New York out to the Niagara Falls or driving back from there – or just doing a road trip in the area.

5 tips for Owego
The annual highlight: the strawberry festival
Owego is known locally for its Strawberry Festival. This takes place in June every year and attracts the crowds. Incidentally, in June 2022 the people of Owego celebrated the festival for the 40th time.
“Las Chiquas Taqueria” and other delicacies
There are some nice cafes and diners too, especially in the center of Owego. But the absolute highlight for me was the Mexican restaurant “Taqueria Girls“. The tacos were so good we kept going back. Everything else was also very tasty, but the tacos are particularly memorable. In good weather you can sit by the water, when we were there it was wet and cold, but inside it’s not only warm but also coolly furnished.

Soak up the flair of Owego
The number one thing I think you should do in Owego is just walk around and immerse yourself in this nice little town that looks like you imagine upstate New York or Connecticut – at least I do. We were there in October and besides the naturally beautiful fall colors, there was a lot of fall decorations in the shops and on the streets. A great atmosphere!
Go to the cafe when it rains
Should it rain, you can simply snuggle up in the accommodation or spend a little more time eating or in the café. For example, I loved “Carol’s Coffee and Art Bar” and was able to spend some time there drinking coffee and reading.
The ideal accommodation in Owego
The center of Owego is especially recommended. But also the “Sunrise Motel“, where we stayed, is absolutely suitable for a short stay, because on the one hand it was nice and clean and the owner was very friendly and accommodating. But then again, because motels are part and parcel of a US road trip – and I suppose there’s no other way to avoid Owego. The “Sunrise Motel” is a typical cliche motel, but not shabby. And as the name suggests, the chances of a beautiful sunrise are also there.
Arrival and location of Owego
Definitely by car. There isn’t that much going on nearby by train or plane. But there are also buses.
