1. Statin
Most patients with high cholesterol will be prescribed a statin. Statins are a class of drugs that prevent the formation of cholesterol in the liver, where it is made. This drug then lowers the amount of cholesterol circulating in the blood and is effective in lowering bad cholesterol, triglycerides and increasing good cholesterol.
Statins usually do not cause serious side effects. Most side effects are mild and go away if you continue to use the drug. The most common side effects include muscle pain and weakness, abdominal pain, constipation, nausea and diarrhea.
2. Inhibitor PCSK9
PCSK9 inhibitors are designed to attach to certain liver proteins, resulting in a decrease in bad cholesterol. This class of drugs can be given with statins and is usually for people at high risk of heart disease who have not been able to lower their cholesterol sufficiently through other means.
Possible side effects include pain, muscle aches (myalgia) and back pain, or swelling at the injection site and runny-like symptoms.
