5 curiosities of McDonald’s Big Mac

This product is one of the most popular of the famous fast food chain, but you surely don’t know as much of this hamburger as you think. That’s why, below, we share some of the most amazing facts about McDonald’s Big Mac.

1 – Already 50 years old

The popular Big Mac made its first national appearance in August 1968. First It was tested a year earlier at a branch in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. When the founder of the franchise, Ray Kroc, tested it, he liked it so much that he had it offered nationwide.

2 – It was made for steel workers

The creator of the Big Mac was Kim Deligatti, who was the owner of the Uniontown restaurant. During the 1960s, many hungry steel workers were going to eat there.

Deligatti realized that normal cheeseburgers didn’t satisfy them, so he began to experience putting two meats on a hamburger, in addition to pickle and onions.

3 – It owes its name to a secretary

Before launching it nationwide, the company tried to give it several names, including ‘The Aristocrat’. However, this name did not give the impression that anyone could buy it.

It wasn’t until Esther Glickstein, a secretary of the McDonald’s advertising department, suggested calling her Big Mac.

4 – Large numbers

Each Big Mac bun has between 385 and 400 sesame seeds and McDonald’s sold more than one billion Big Macs in 2017 alone.

5 – There is a museum about this product

It is located in North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, and was created by Jim Delligatt, the creator of the dish, and his son. This museum was opened in 2007.

Some of its attractions include a 14 foot Big Mac statue, historical memories, like a toaster from the seventies, and there’s also a McDonald’s restaurant.
