5 Causes of Vaginal Bleeding After Sex

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Vaginal bleeding after intercourse sex is a fairly common thing. According to Chicago obstetrician and gynecologist Nicole Williams, this condition is commonly referred to as postcoital bleeding, referring to bleeding due to penetration into the vagina.

Often times, it is caused by irritation after sex. Not only penile penetration can cause vaginal bleeding, but also any kind of penetration even from fingers or sex toys.

In addition, vaginal bleeding after sex can also be a sign of the beginning or end of your menstrual period.

There are several other things that cause vaginal bleeding after sex. Here are 5 causes of vaginal bleeding after sex.

1. Vaginal sores

Vaginal sores are a common cause of bleeding after sex. There are two things that cause the vagina to be injured, first rough penetration, or the vagina is not ready for penetration so it is very dry.

“Vaginal sores can occur with normal sex or rough sex,” said Brandye Wilson-Manigat, an obstetrician at The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, as quoted. Women’s Health.

Usually, vaginal dryness occurs during breastfeeding or near menopause. Dry vagina can cause sores, which can lead to bleeding.

Taking hormonal contraceptives or using lubricants may be your options if your vagina is too dry.

However, vaginal sores are more likely to occur in someone who has never had sex, or has had sex again after a long time.

“If you haven’t had sex in a long time, the soft skin around the vagina will be pulled because of the penetration (microtear) and cause injury,” said Williams.

2. Pelvic Infections

Bleeding during or after sex can also be a sign of a pelvic infection.

Manigat said that when the cervix becomes infected, the surrounding tissue becomes swollen and red as the body tries to get more blood and white blood cells to the area to fight the infection.

“This makes the uterus too sensitive and bleeding occurs, even without direct stimulation,” he said.

Postnatal infections can also cause bleeding during sex, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea infections.

If you have recently had a baby and are bleeding again after sex, it’s best to see a doctor right away. Doctors will usually do a pap smear test first to see if there is a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

But not all STIs cause bleeding, some other infections such as bacterial or yeast infections can also make the vagina bleed during sex.
