4 Conditions If You Want To Do A Low Calorie Diet

The application of a low-calorie or extreme diet is permissible only under certain conditions.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The emergence of a trend extreme diets often manages to attract large crowds because of its instant weight loss effect. In fact, the application of extreme diets should only be done under certain conditions.

“An extreme diet is a diet that in our field is known as very low-calorie diet, very low in calories, “said clinical nutrition specialist Dr. Dr. Samuel Oetoro MS SpGK (K), in #GoodTalkSeries with GoodDoctor via IG Live @gooddoctor.id, Sunday (14/3).

Dr Samuel said a diet can be said to be a very low calorie diet if the total calories consumed in one day are less than 800 calories. When it comes to weight loss, a very low calorie diet is guaranteed to help you lose weight. However, an extreme diet that is carried out without the supervision of a trained doctor such as a clinical nutrition specialist, can pose a variety of risks to health.

One of the health problems most often caused by extreme diets that are done carelessly is the formation of gallstones. Other problems that also often occur are increased uric acid, impaired liver function, easy feeling cold, hair loss, constipation, and decreased muscle mass.

Dr Samuel said the extreme diet will make the body take protein as a source of energy. This then causes a decrease in muscle mass. What is dangerous, there are muscles in many places in the body, including in the heart.

“Be careful, heart muscle protein is attracted, over time the heart muscle lacks protein, it is very dangerous, especially if the extreme diet is carried out under 400 calories (per day),” explained Dr. Samuel.

Basically, extreme diets can only be done if there are indications. In addition, there are various important factors that must also be applied when an extreme diet is an option.

The following are various things that must be fulfilled if an extreme diet is applied, as revealed by clinical nutrition specialists.

There is an Indication
Not everyone should go on an extreme diet. A diet like this can only be done if there are indications, for example obesity.

“Body Mass Index (BMI) is more than 30, this is an indication that an extreme diet can be done, or with a BMI of more than 27 but with comorbidities,” explained clinical nutrition specialist Dr. Feni Nugroho MARS MGz SpGK.
