1. Procrastination among students

Researchers say procrastination can be particularly prominent among students.

A 2007 meta-analysis published in the Psychological Bulletin found that between 80 percent and 95 percent of college students procrastinate, especially when it comes to completing assignments.

According to researchers, there are several main cognitive distortions that cause procrastination in academic circles, namely:

  • Exaggerating the time left to do the task
  • Underestimating how long a certain activity will take
  • The erroneous assumption that they have to be in the right frame of mind to do a task.

2. Depression

Procrastination can also be caused by depression. Feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, and lack of energy can make it difficult for a person to begin and complete even the simplest of tasks.

Depression can also lead to self-doubt. When a person cannot find a way to tackle a task or feels inadequate, he or she may tend to procrastinate and take on another task.

3. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Procrastination is also quite common in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

One reason is that OCD is often associated with unhealthy and maladaptive perfectionism, which causes fear of making new mistakes, doubts about whether one is doing things right, and worry about what others expect of them.

4. ADHD

Many adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have procrastination tendencies.

When he is highly distracted by external stimuli, as well as internal thoughts, it may be difficult to initiate a task, especially if the task is deemed difficult or uninteresting to him.
