4.76 Million Voters Expected to Participate in Remote Electronic Voting During Russian Presidential Election

During the presidential election period, 4.76 million voters are expected to participate in remote electronic voting.

In Russia, where the three-day presidential election has just begun, the number of people who have participated in electronic voting has exceeded 250,000.

According to TASS on the 15th (local time), on the first day of the Russian presidential election, the election website announced that 251,009 Russian citizens had voted remotely electronically as of 5:43 a.m. (11:43 a.m. Korean time).

The total number of voters participating in remote electronic voting in this election is 4.76 million. Russia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) estimates the number of voters participating in this election at 112 million.

Russian citizens participating in electronic voting, which was first introduced in the presidential election, submitted applications in advance. However, Russian citizens residing in the capital Moscow did not need to apply in advance.

On the 11th, Russian CEC Chairman Yella Pamfilova said that as of 10 a.m. on this day, 1,419,396 citizens in 39 regions of Russia participated in early voting. Among them, 1,396,062 people participated in the election at polling stations set up in remote areas, and 23,334 people voted from ships at sea,” the announcement said.

The Russian presidential election will be held from the 15th to the 17th. Russia also included Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye oblasts taken from Ukraine as constituencies. The Krum Peninsula, which was forcibly annexed in 2014, will also hold elections.

There are a total of four candidates, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is running as an independent candidate. In addition, Vladislav Davankov of the New People, a de facto opposition party, Leonid Slutsky of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR), and Nikolai Kharitonov of the Communist Party of Russia (CPRF) voted to run.

Anti-Putin opposition candidate Boris Nadezdin’s candidacy was thwarted by the CEC’s refusal to register as a candidate. Prior to this, Ekaterina Duntsova was also rejected from running in December last year due to ‘flaws in her candidacy registration documents’.

If President Putin is elected this time, his term will be extended until 2030. Joseph Stalin’s reign as Secretary of the Communist Party of the former Soviet Union exceeded 29 years (1924-1953).

The president-elect’s inauguration date will be May 7.
