3D scans show insides of ancient animal mummies

Researchers at Swansea University have created 3D scans of mummified animals that lived in ancient Egypt more than 2,000 years ago. Previous research had identified which animals they were, but little else was known about what was inside the mummies.

The three mummies are of a cat, an Egyptian cobra and a kestrel. With 3-D X-rays, researchers saw extraordinary details, down to their smallest bones and teeth. The team found that the cat was a five-month-old kitten. The scans show the young teeth hidden in the jawbone. Judging by the injuries, they think the animals were sacrificed.
