Between July 13 and July 19, 192 new infections with the new coronavirus were detected on average per day, indicate figures from the Sciensano Public Health Institute updated this Thursday morning. This is’an increase of 91% compared to the average for the previous week. Since the start of the epidemic, 64,627 cases of Covid-19 have been diagnosed in Belgium.

For this Monday July 20, Sciensano reports 370 cases diagnosed. A figure that had never been so high since May 20, with 381 confirmed cases. This daily toll could increase, several days being necessary for all cases to be reported to the Institute of Public Health.

This Thursday, a National Security Council must decide on the measures that will be applied in the coming weeks to try to stem what looks more and more like a second wave, still slight for the moment, but which has continued to grow for several days.

What is certain is that phase 5 of deconfinement will not be launched soon. On the contrary, we expect the announcement of measures such as an obligation to wear a mask extended to new places, reinforced controls, etc.

The increase is observed in all provinces, except Walloon Brabant. All age groups are affected, although the increase is more marked for under 50s, which represent 71% of all cases diagnosed this last week, specifies the SPF Public Health.

Hospitalizations on the rise
The average number of patients admitted to hospital increases by 40% compared to the previous week, with an average of 13,6 admissions daily. “The increase in the number of hospital admissions is starting to be confirmed, which was expected given the increase in the number of cases diagnosed in recent weeks and is being closely monitored”, indicates the SPF Public Health.

The trend in the number of death evolves in a similar way. With 2.6 daily deaths on average per day between July 13 and 19, the increase amounts to 38% compared to the previous week. Since the start of the epidemic, 64,627 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Belgium and 9,808 patients have succumbed to the virus.

Yves Van Laethem tested negative
After announcing Wednesday that he was quarantining himself after contact with an infected person, interfederal spokesman Yves Van Laethem received the results of his test this Thursday. They are negative, but he has already announced that he will remain in quarantine and undergo a second screening in ten days. “I am a good example to say that, even by respecting the measures, even by remaining in one’s bubble, by simply being in contact with close people, by taking the maximum of precautions, one can still be contaminated”, a- he warned.
