30 years of a small pale blue dot

Voyager probe

It is probably the least “scientific” photo, since it reveals nothing to the discerning eye, alongside the photos of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, in addition to the distant planets Uranus and Neptune photographed by its twin Traveling 2.

Dozens of worlds have been revealed in detail for the first time by Voyager 2, offering humanity a portrait of the unexpected variety of our solar system.

fragile

But Pale Blue Dot had, in comparison, an emotional charge: we who think we are so great, here we are revealed to be very fragile.

And a poetic charge: Voyager 1 and 2, in addition to being explorers, are our ambassadors: as it stands, they continue on their way, crossing the ultimate magnetic frontiers of our solar system. If nothing stops them, they will come across other solar systems in the next million years.

The famous astronomer and popularizer Carl Sagan, involved in the project Travel since its inception, had offered this photo in 1981, explaining: “It seemed to me that another photo of the Earth could help the process of becoming aware of who we are, our situation and our state. It had been well understood by scientists and philosophers of Antiquity that the Earth was just a point in a vast Cosmos, but no one had yet seen it thus. It was our first chance. “
