30% of the positive COVID-19 cases reported in Santa Clara County belong to the Latino community – Telemundo Bay Area 48

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Latino community in eastern San José has been the most affected in terms of the number of positive cases reported in this area.

The Santa Clara County Health Department assured that 30% of the positive cases reported in the county belong to this community.

For this reason, local authorities and nonprofits have come together in an effort to offer resources such as COVID-19 testing at home.

Authorities reported that this community is at a higher risk of contagion because families have to go out to work and thus obtain income to pay rent and food.

“Many families in eastern San José do not have the luxury of working from home having a room to leave their homes, they just have to go out to work,” said Ana Lilia García, spokeswoman for the county health department.

Non-profit organizations have made every effort to bring information to Hispanic families about the resources they have.

“We are going to stores, knocking on doors, calling on the phone, reaching out on Facebook live to let them know about the places where they can take the Covid test,” said Cinthia Colmenares, spokeswoman for the Sí Se Podemos collective.

Officials called on residents to avoid meeting with people who do not live in their home, wash their hands and adhere to social distancing protocols.

Organizations invited people to come to the Mexican Heritage Plaza on Wednesday, where they will offer free COVID-19 tests from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm
