President Xi Jinping’s administration considers Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan a violation of the country’s sovereignty and the One China principle. The visit was also considered by China to be sending the wrong signal to Taipei, which insisted on independence.

China is not kidding about the warning. In addition to the ultimatum, Beijing has also carried out a series of actions in response to Pelosi’s visit.

Here is a list of China’s “punishments” for Taiwan for Pelosi’s visit:

1. ‘Siege’ Taiwan with Military Exercises

On the same day as Pelosi’s visit, China immediately announced large-scale military exercises including combat simulations and shootouts at six points around Taiwan.

“This action is a serious deterrent to the recent major escalation of the United States’ negative action on the Taiwan issue, and a serious warning to ‘Taiwan independence’ forces seeking ‘independence,'” said Colonel Shi Yi, spokesman for China’s Eastern Theater Military Command, through a statement as quoted CNN.

China’s Ministry of Defense said China’s military was “on high alert and will launch a series of targeted military operations to counter the current situation, resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolutely thwart the interference of external powers and the Taiwan independence separation scheme”.

In an unusual move, Chinese state media also posted on Twitter a map showing six areas around Taiwan where the Chinese army’s military training site will be.

The military exercises will start today, Thursday to Sunday in the Taiwan Strait. Some of the military training areas are 12 miles or only about 19 km from Taiwan.

Since the beginning of this week, China has also returned to sending dozens of its fighter jets through Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ). On Wednesday night, 27 Chinese fighter jets again breached Taiwan’s ADIZ.

Taiwan is also preparing to face China’s military provocation after Pelosi’s visit angered the Bamboo Curtain country.
