282 new infections in Austria: “The age pyramid has …

The government wants to advise “without taboos” about possible consequences. The average age of new corona infections is currently 33.7 years.

For the first time in months there are more than 200 new corona infections in Austria within 24 hours: As of Friday morning, there are 282, as Health Minister Rudolf Anschober announced at a press conference. Vienna has by far the most new infections with 112, followed by Upper Austria with 45. 110 infected people are treated in hospital (minus 4), 19 in the intensive care unit (minus 3). 153 infected people have recently recovered.

“That is alarming,” said Anschober about the new infections. One now has to observe whether it is just a “slip up” or whether the increasing numbers are mainly due to the increased number of tests or have other causes. On the basis of this analysis, the government will draw the appropriate conclusions next week. “There are no taboos,” said the minister when asked whether there is one Travel warning for Croatia could give.

In the tests Austria has exceeded “a historical mark” of one million: There were 1,003,432 tests as of Friday morning. “We have never tested as much as we do now,” emphasized Anschober. In the period from April 4 to 13, around 50,000 tests were completed, and 81,000 from August 4 to 13. In the past 24 hours it was almost 12,000.

Family celebrations as a cluster

“A relatively large number of family celebrations and small celebrations” recently turned out to be a corona cluster. In addition, there are relatively many travel-related infections. 24 percent of those who tested positive in the past few weeks had no symptoms.

The health minister explained that the age pyramid had completely changed. Even if the peak was earlier in older people, the group between 15 and 24 years has dominated in the last seven days. The average age of new corona infections is currently 33.7 years.

As a possible explanation, Anschober sees the carelessness of some young people who would believe that they are not affected anyway. “A misconception”, as the minister warns: “Nobody is safe”, even if the risk of severe disease is lower than that of older people. The latter also explains the decline in hospital and intensive care treatments (there has been a 24 percent decrease in intensive care beds in recent days) despite the increasing number of infected people.
