222,000 broilers culled because of bird flu in Friesland

Bird flu has been diagnosed at a poultry farm in Blija. About 177,000 broilers from the company in the north of Friesland are being culled to prevent the virus from spreading. 45,000 broilers from a company a hundred meters away are also culled as a precaution. The companies are under the same ownership.

Samples are taken from three other companies within a radius of three kilometers around the infected location in Blija to see whether bird flu is also present there. Within a radius of 10 kilometers around the company, there is a transport ban for birds and eggs for poultry farms. Ten poultry farms are affected by this.

The NVWA is investigating whether employees or visitors of the infected farm in Blija have been in contact with other poultry farms, reports Omrop Fryslân.

Worst bird flu outbreak ever

Europe is struggling with the worst bird flu outbreak ever. The virus is currently found throughout Europe.

In the Netherlands, since the end of October, a national obligation to cage and shield has been in force because of the bird flu. It was instituted after an outbreak on a biological poultry farm in Zeewolde.
