2026 World Cup: Historic Expansion to 48 Teams, Co-Organized by Three Countries

In 2026, football will experience a historic World Cup. For the first time, it will be contested by forty-eight teams and co-organized by three countries.

For the moment, we did not know exactly how the meetings would be distributed. But FIFA has lifted a corner of the veil on the progress of the competition. We therefore know that the first match will take place on June 11: Mexico will play the opening match in the legendary Azteca stadium. A stadium which saw the finals of 1970 and 1986 contested during the World Championships played in Mexico.

For Mexico, the group stage matches will then take place at the Akron stadium in Guadalajara (June 18) and then again at the Azteca stadium (June 24).

For the second host country, the United States, the World Cup will begin on June 12 with a meeting at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The second game will take place at Lumen Field in Seattle on June 19 and the third meeting will take place again in Los Angeles on June 25. Finally, Canada will kick off at BMO Field in Toronto on June 12 before playing at BC Place in Vancouver on June 18 and 24.

As for the final, it will take place on June 19 at MetLife Stadium in New York. The Hard Rock Stadium will have hosted the match for third place in Miami the day before.

It should also be noted that the AT&T Statdium in Dallas will host the most matches in the competition. With a capacity of 92,967 places, it will see nine matches played there.

In total, this 2026 World Cup will include 104 matches which will take place in sixteen different cities: eleven in the United States (Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle), three in Mexico (Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey) and two in Canada (Toronto, Vancouver).
