The winter viral season is the most difficult time for children with asthma. Watching your child become short of breath can be scary. If your child has asthma, we can help you learn to recognize the symptoms of an asthma attack and how to treat it. By working with your child’s doctor, you can develop an asthma control plan that’s best for your family. Knowing when and how to use asthma medications can keep your child healthy and active.
In this lecture, Dr. Kalliope Tsirilakis will take us to discuss “How to control asthma”, so as to provide asthma patients with the most immediate and effective help to relieve symptoms.
Dr. Kalliope Tsirilakis is the director of the Department of Pediatric Pulmonary and Asthma at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital. She will use her clinical experience and professional knowledge to understand asthma, control asthma, and reduce symptoms in the simplest and most effective way.
Asthma is a disease that causes the airways to become narrow, swollen, and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, shortness of breath, and a whistling sound (wheezing) when exhaling.
Asthma is just a minor annoyance to some people. For others it can be a huge problem that not only interferes with daily activities but can lead to life-threatening asthma attacks.
Asthma symptoms vary from person to person. Asthma symptoms occur only at certain times, such as when exercising, or you may have asthma symptoms all the time.
Signs and symptoms of asthma include:
– Shortness of breath
– Chest tightness or pain
– Wheezing on exhalation, a common sign of asthma in children
– Difficulty sleeping due to shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing
– Coughing or wheezing attacks that are worsened by a respiratory virus (such as a cold or flu)
Signs of asthma exacerbation include:
– More frequent and bothersome asthma signs and symptoms
– Increased dyspnea, which can be detected by a device used to check the working of the lungs (maximum expiratory flow meter)
– Need to use the quick relief inhaler more often
For some people, the signs and symptoms of asthma flare up under certain circumstances:
– Exercise-induced asthma, which may be worse when the air is cold and dry
– Occupational asthma triggered by workplace irritants such as chemical fumes, gases or dust
– Allergic asthma, triggered by airborne substances such as pollen, mold spores, cockroach waste or skin particles shed by pets (pet dander) and dried saliva
Asthma is a common disease, and the possible complications or effects on the body are easily ignored by the public. Through this online health lecture, we should pay more attention to asthma and give asthma patients more care and help.
