“2023 Copa do Brasil Round of 16: Match Schedule and Prize Pool Breakdown”

The return games of the 2023 Copa do Brasil round of 16 start this Wednesday, with six clashes that define vacancies for the next phase. Two other matches take place on Thursday.

From the quarterfinals, the draw defines the clashes, field commands and the starting lineup until the final. Games are scheduled for the weeks of July 5th and 12th.

Ida: Palmeiras won 3-0, at Allianz Parque, and can lose by two goals difference to qualify. Fortaleza has to win with four goals difference to advance directly or by three goals difference to lead to penalties.

Ida: the first game ended goalless: 0 to 0, in Vila Belmiro. Whoever wins qualifies. Another draw leads to penalties.

Ida: the match ended in a 1-1 tie, at Arena do Grêmio. Whoever wins qualifies. Another draw leads to penalties.

Ida: América-MG won 2-0, at Arena Independência, playing for a tie and could lose by a goal difference to qualify. Inter have to win with three goals difference to advance directly or by two goals difference to lead to penalties.

Ida: Athletico won by 3 to 2, at the turn, at Arena da Baixada, and plays for a tie to advance. Botafogo has to win with two goals difference to qualify directly or by a goal difference to lead to penalties.

Ida: Atlético-MG beat the opponent by 2-0, in the Mineirão, playing for a tie and could lose by a goal difference to qualify. Corinthians have to win with three goals difference to advance directly or by two goals difference to lead to penalties.

Ida: São Paulo won 2-0, on Ilha do Retiro, playing for a tie and can lose by a goal difference to advance. Sport has to win with three goals difference to advance directly or by two goals difference to lead to penalties.

Ida: the classic ended in a 0-0 draw at Maracanã. Whoever wins qualifies. Another draw leads to penalties.

America-MG, Bahia, Botafogo, Grêmio and Santos remain from the first phase. Only Paysandu, champion of the Copa Verde, ended up eliminated among the teams that entered the third phase – it stopped at Fluminense.

Athletico, Atlético-MG, Corinthians, Flamengo, Fortaleza, Fluminense, Internacional and Palmeiras came through Libertadores. São Paulo entered via Brasileiro.

Cruzeiro, on the other hand, was champion of Série B, while Sport qualified for the runner-up in the 2022 Copa do Nordeste – inheriting Fortaleza’s vacancy. The Pernambuco team is the only representative of Série B.

The games are round trip, with decision on penalties in case of a tie in the sum of the scores of the two games. Goals scored away from home will not be used as a tiebreaker in the Round of 16.

The CBF will distribute a record prize pool at the 2023 Copa do Brasil. R$ 420 million will be divided between the first phase and the final. The champion takes BRL 70 million and the runner-up BRL 30 million, not counting the accumulated value of the other phases.

A significant change was in the criteria for awarding clubs, which will now win according to the division of the Brazilian Championship they compete in. Clubs without a national division will receive the same pot value as clubs in Serie C and D. (see table below)

The champion of the Copa do Brasil will accumulate R$ 91.8 million if he comes from the first phase and is part of group 1; BRL 91.35 million if it is part of group 2 or BRL 90.35 million if it comes from group 3.

If the champion is one of the 12 teams that will start from the third phase, the accumulated prize in case of title will be R$ 88.7 million.

Those qualified for the quarterfinals will receive a prize of R$ 4.3 million.
