2023 Asian Cup Last 16 Qualifiers: Japan Secures Spot with 3-1 Victory Over Indonesia

KOMPAS.com – A total of 14 teams have confirmed that they will qualify for the last 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup. Now there are only two slots left for the knockout phase.

The list of teams qualifying for the last 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup has increased again after Group D completed its last matchday, Wednesday (24/1/2024).

Japan secured a ticket to the last 16 after winning 3-1 over Indonesia in the match which was held at Al Thumama Stadium, Doha.

The victory over the Indonesian national team meant that Japan locked in runner-up status in Group D.

Japan accompanied group winners Iraq to qualify for the last 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup.

Meanwhile, Iraq ended the preliminary round with perfect results thanks to a 3-2 victory over Vietnam in the last match.

Meanwhile, Indonesia, which finished in third place in Group D, still has a chance of qualifying through the best third place route.

With the addition of Japan, there are now 14 teams that are certain to qualify for the round of 16.

Previously, from Groups E and F there were also two teams each who were confirmed to have passed the knockout phase.

The two teams from Group E are Jordan and South Korea, while the two teams from Group F are Saudi Arabia and Thailand.

Saudi Arabia currently tops Group F with six points, two points ahead of Thailand which is ranked second.

Thailand guaranteed a place in the last 16 after drawing 0-0 with Oman in the second match.

These results mean that Thailand is guaranteed to enter the knockout phase, at least through the best third place route.
