So what is the answer to the question why 2 liters of cooking oil doesn’t even weigh 2 kilograms when weighed?

Liter itself is the official unit for the unit of volume. Liquids, or solids being liquefied, use this measure. The kilogram is the unit used to measure the mass of an object.

So if we want to measure from liters to kilograms, we can’t directly convert volume units to kilograms.

In order for the unit of volume to be converted to a unit of weight, it takes another quantity that relates the two, namely density.

Density is a constant possessed by every object whether solid, liquid or gas. To calculate density, it is mass divided by volume.

Lecturer of the Department of Physics at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Dr. Edi Suharyadi, M.Eng, stated that the density of water is 0.997 which when rounded up becomes 1 in kilograms or liters. So when 1 liter of water is weighed, it weighs 1 kilogram.

But it’s different with oil. When contacted by Kompas.com, Tuesday (1/2/2022), Edi explained that the density of cooking oil is not the same as the density of water. Mass of oil type fry is about 0.9.

So, if there is a volume of oil of 2 liters the mass or weight of cooking oil is 1.8 kilograms, not round to 2 kilograms.

“If there is a volume of 2 liters of oil, it means the mass of oil = 1.8 kg,” said Edi to Kompas.com.

So when people find cooking oil packaged in 2 liters but it weighs less than 2 kilograms, it is a very natural thing.
