The Governing Council of the Junta de Castilla y León has approved the granting of a grant to the Ponferrada City Council, for the amount of 190.000 euros, to finance the remodeling of Calle General Gómez Núñez and thus improve the quality of the architectural space, a basic factor for the revitalization of this commercial hub traditional city. The works will consist of the removal of architectural barriers and soft pedestrianization, prioritizing the pedestrian but compatible with road traffic.
The remodeling of General Gómez Núñez Street will affect the section covered between the streets of La Paz and Avenida de Valdés It will consist of the removal of architectural barriers, as well as a soft pedestrianization, with improved mobility, prioritizing the pedestrian and making it compatible with road traffic and public transport.
The works also include the improvement of public spaces by implementing savings strategies in terms of energy efficiency, (urban furniture, lighting, irrigation, ecological materials, maintenance reduction etc …), which will be completed with a display of the technical infrastructures for computer science and advanced communications as a basic service network (wifi, fiber optics, led information screens.
The Ponferrada City Council intends to revitalize the traditional commerce of the town by improving the quality of the urban space and for this it has launched an Urban Regeneration Plan for the commercial and service axes of Camino de Santiago and General Gómez Núñez streets. To date, it has executed the 1st and 2nd phases on Camino de Santiago Street and the 1st of the remodeling of General Gómez Núñez Street.
The first intervention in Gómez Núñez involved an investment of 360,000 euros, of which 60,000 were contributed by the city council after the agreement reached by the mayor Gloria Fernández Merayo with the Junta de Castilla y León.
A third phase will be added to this second phase, charged to the ARU Puebla Norte budget, between Avenida de Valdés and the roundabout of IES Virgen de la Encina.
