19 new deaths in the Netherlands, confirmed infections to 1,705 | NOW

The number of coronavirus infections in the Netherlands has risen to 1,705 with 292 newly confirmed infections, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reports Tuesday. As of Monday, another nineteen people have died from the effects of the COVID-19 virus.

In total, 43 people died. “The age of the deceased is between 63 and 94 years. We previously reported that the youngest deceased was 59, this was due to an administrative error. In total, 314 patients were or have been admitted to a hospital,” said the RIVM.

Of the 1,705 infected persons, 389 people are employed in healthcare. Healthcare workers are tested more often than people with a different profession.

Most people who have tested positive live in North Brabant. It concerns 634 people in that province. Limburg (197 confirmed infections) and South Holland (175) will follow.

The actual number is higher

The actual number of infections with the coronavirus in the Netherlands is higher than RIVM reports. Not everyone is tested for the virus, and the institute only discloses confirmed infection cases. In addition, some people do not notice that they are infected, because they have not received any complaints.

It is also difficult to map the number of healings, although RIVM would like to do this. It is not mandatory to report a cure. The institute is collecting these figures.

Rutte: ‘Coronavirus is among us and will remain so for the time being’

Prime Minister Mark Rutte spoke to the country on Monday in a speech in which he said that “the country is facing an enormous challenge”. The prime minister described the measures taken as “unprecedented for peacetime countries”.

“A large part of the Dutch population will be infected with the virus,” said the prime minister. As long as there is no vaccine, the Netherlands will fight the virus by building up controlled group immunity. The larger the immune group, the less likely the frail elderly and people with poor health can get the virus.

However, building group immunity can take months, the prime minister said. “At that time, we should shield people who are at greater risk as much as possible,” says Rutte.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads through sneezes and cough drops. The virus can be transmitted directly from person to person or (for a limited time) through surfaces such as door handles.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Nearly all deaths involve the elderly or other frail, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
