19 – Coronavirus also enters the body through the nose

SARS-CoV-2 also serves as the gateway to the human body.

In many symptomatic infected patients, the novel coronavirus leads to signs of illness in the upper and later in the lower airways. So far it has not been clear whether the virus uses the tissue in the throat or the mucous membranes of the nose as the entrance gate.

This has been investigated by a US research team from North Carolina. According to the study authors in the specialist magazine CELL, the virus is therefore particularly good at infecting cells of the nasal mucosa and from there making its way into the lower respiratory tract.
