The first lockdown with distance learning at home hit many families in Salzburg with children without a PC or laptop on the wrong foot. In May, two months after the start of the pandemic, the federal and state governments purchased 800 tablets for secondary school students. 555 additional devices have been made available to students in federal schools. At the start of school in autumn, another 380 mobile computers have been ordered from compulsory schools. The schools themselves determine how many students need a tablet for distance learning.

Delivery bottlenecks for laptops and tablets
Due to the enormous general demand for laptops and tablets during the coronavirus crisis, many manufacturers are now having delivery problems, and these devices are only arriving in small tranches. The last tablets ordered will be available in schools from mid-December. In total, there are now 1,735 devices in Salzburg that are made available to schoolchildren for distance learning free of charge. The pupils are not allowed to keep these tablets after their school days, they become the property of the schools.
