Story met Jaap Amesz in a place you wouldn’t expect: during a court case involving discredited chess master Yge V. “Yge was my chess teacher nearly thirty years ago,” Jaap explains in conversation with Story . “When I found out he was in trouble, I started supporting him. I live near Nijmegen where Yge is in a TBS clinic. I play chess with him every Friday night.’
Anonymity
After his disappearance from TV, Jaap has consciously lived in anonymity, because he was regularly invited for numerous TV appearances. “I was asked to participate in many televised games, but I said no to everything. This doesn’t make me happy. What I would like is Expedition Robinson. I would like. Then I have a goal. Then I’d starve the rest of the people. I get the best out of it, because I have more mass. I find it funny.’
Documentary coming?
Jaap will open a book about his current life in the near future. “That will come with my next initiative,” Jaap says cryptically. “What is it, I still keep it to myself. But something is coming.’ A book or a documentary? “I’ll announce it when the time comes. Otherwise I will get all kinds of questions again and miss my deadline. In my next initiative there will be things that no one knew.’
