14 Provinces Fully Recover from Bird Flu, DA Declares Maguindanao del Sur and Isabela Free

A total of 14 provinces have fully recovered from bird flu after the Department of Agriculture (DA) declared Maguindanao del Sur and Isabela now free of bird flu.

The Prosecutor’s Office issued the statement in separate editions several months after the local government reported bird flu outbreaks in the two provinces.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the last test returned a negative result more than 90 days after the end of cleaning and disinfection operations and surveillance activities.

Previously, the agency said the following provinces had fully recovered from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI): Camarines Sur; South Davao; Rizal; South Cotabato; Ilocos Sul; Batangas; capiz; Quezon; Aurora; Northern Ilocos; Pangasinan; and Cotabato.

The World Organization for Animal Health’s terrestrial animal health code states that a previously free country or zone can regain avian influenza-free status at least 28 days after completing the culling policy and disinfecting the last affected premises, and that subsequent surveillance shows the absence of infection.

Previously, Maguindanao del Sur recorded three confirmed cases of HPAI subtype H5N1. This disease was detected in ducks in Ampatuan City on April 8 and May 27 2022.

On the other hand, Isabela had three confirmed cases of HPAI subtype H5N1 detected in laying hens, ducks, game birds, pigeons, and free-range chickens in Cauayan city and Alicia and Gamu cities on April 21, May 23, and November 7 last year. . .

Immediately, the provincial governments of Maguindanao del Sur and Isabela, in coordination with the DA regional office and the Department of Animal Industry, carried out disease investigation, immediate depopulation, cleaning and disinfection, movement restrictions and surveillance in the affected areas.

Continuous disease monitoring and surveillance in the 1 and 7 km surveillance zones around the affected farms has resulted in negative test results for influenza virus type A.

Even before the first case of H5N1 was confirmed in the region, Maguindanao del Sur and Isabela were free of bird flu in birds.
