13-Year-Old American Boy Reaches Unprecedented Level 157 in Tetris, Making History and Winning Prizes

And behold, at level 157, with the point counter at 999999, Tetris crasha. Willis Gibson, a 13-year-old American boy living in Stillwater, Oklahoma, will be the first player to reach the end of the classic video game. In the end because, although it is theoretically possible to play forever, it was thought until a few years ago that it was not possible to surpass level 29. It is now known that it is at level 157 that the colored blocks fall so quickly that the game itself freezes.

The feat was achieved on December 21st and the video of the moment was shared by the young player, Tuesday, on YouTube (note: in the video, the level indicated is 18 due to character limitations – in fact, it is level 157). This Wednesday, the feat was reported by newspapers such as New York Times and the Guardian. “Oh my god,” exclaims Gibson. “I can’t feel my fingers,” he says, hyperventilating.

The session in which Gibson crashou the game lasted 38 minutes and also resulted in a record for points and lines. The boy dedicated the triumph to his father, Adam, who died in December.

The North American teenager played the first version of Tetris for the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), released in 1989. The original game was developed in 1985, in the Soviet Union, by Alexey Pajitnov.

Almost 40 years later, it continues to be one of the most popular in the world, having won over new generations of players. Of these, many use emulators and try to manipulate the game on the computer to beat records. Gibson, however, plays Tetris in hardware original, with the NES and an old television.

Gibson has been playing Tetris semi-professionally since he was 11 years old, having already participated in several tournaments. He trains around 20 hours a week and has won around 3000 dollars (2746 euros) in prizes so far.

“It’s easy to start playing but it’s very difficult to master it,” he told New York Times, explaining that it was the game’s “simplicity” that attracted him. “I don’t like the new games as much as I like the old games,” he said.
