100 intact sarcophagi found in tombs in Egypt

The sarcophagi were found in three burial chambers 12 meters underground in Saqqara, located just a few miles southeast of the Giza pyramid in Cairo.

The 100 sarcophagi are estimated to be from the period 700 years – 30 years before Christ. The discovery comes just a month after archaeologists found 59 other intact sarcophagi from the same area.

There is still a lot to discover in Saqqara, says Egypt’s tourism minister.

– The excavations are still in progress. Every time we empty a burial chamber for sarcophagi, we find an entrance to a new one, says Khaled al-Anany.

Over 40 statues of ancient gods were also found in the tombs. Several of the objects will be exhibited at the upcoming Grand Museum in Cairo. Further announcements of several other discoveries are expected in the coming weeks, according to the Minister of Tourism.
