1 in 10 People Have Kidney Disease, The Majority Don’t Realize It

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Chairperson of the Indonesian Nephrology Association (Pernefri), Dr. Aida Lydia PhD, SpPD-KGH, said that from global data, one in 10 people in the world experience kidney disease. The majority of them (9 out of 10 people) do not know that they have kidney problems.

Dr. Aida explained, the new symptoms appear after kidney function has dropped considerably, it is nearing the end stage, then there are symptoms. In advanced stages, a sign or symptom of kidney problems is swelling in the legs. This happens because the kidneys can no longer regulate body fluids.

In addition, it can also be characterized by high blood pressure or uncontrolled hypertension. If the fluid in the body increases enough it can cause shortness of breath. Other symptoms are bone disorders and fatigue.

“In severe cases, disturbances of consciousness and convulsions can occur,” said Dr. Aida, adding that when symptoms appear, people usually seek help from a hospital or a doctor.
