Antony Modeste was well on its way to disappearing into oblivion. Suddenly, however, the old fan favorite is also the new one.
He had made the best of his career. For several years, Antony Modeste changed clubs at short intervals, even for professionals. Between 2010 and 2013 he was under contract in Nice, Angers, Bordeaux with the Blackburn Rovers and in Bastia. This was followed by a move to Hoffenheim and in 2015 to Cologne. At last the Frenchman seemed to have arrived, but he had other plans.
The big payday called: Now all the transfers should finally pay off massively from his account. Modeste signed with the Chinese first division club Tianjin Quanjian. No traditional club like that 1. FC Cologne. The sporting level far below the Bundesliga. But: Foreign exchange also has argumentative power. Modeste seemed to have reached the lucrative dead end of the career.

Four years later, the old crowd favorite from Cologne is also the new one. He scored four goals in the first five match days of the season. Most recently, he took the lead in the 1-1 draw against Leipzig. He already had tears in his eyes while cheering, and later at the TV station’s microphone Sky. “It’s my dad’s birthday today. That’s a lot of emotions for me,” said Modeste: “I lost my dad three years ago.”
Most modern guest appearance in China failed
After Modestes appearance in China was quickly over, the striker quickly found his way back to Cologne. But the warmed-up love quickly cooled. Modeste could no longer build on the performance of his first seasons. Last year, the Rhinelander even loaned him to AS Saint-Étienne. But even there he did not find his way back on track.
Under coach Steffen Baumgart, however, he is now building on bygone times: the new old darling of the public.
