The judgment of the first trial court on former Justice Minister Cho Kook, who was handed over to trial on charges of irregularities in the entrance examination of children and ignoring inspections, will come out tomorrow (3rd).

It has been more than three years since he was prosecuted for a large-scale prosecution investigation conducted before and after the inauguration of the minister.

Previously, prosecutors had sought a five-year prison sentence.

Reporter Choi Min-gi reports.

The first trial sentence of former Justice Minister Cho Kook, who was handed over to trial at the end of 2019, will be handed down tomorrow.

It’s been 3 years and 2 months since the indictment.

Former Minister Cho has been determined to be a target investigation by the prosecution and has always denied all charges.

The core of former Minister Cho’s charges, like his wife, former professor Kyung-Shim Jeong, is obstruction of business and preparation of false public documents related to the suspicion of irregularities in the entrance examination of children.

Suspicion of bribery in the name of daughter’s scholarship and corruption of private equity funds, fabrication and concealment of evidence such as taking out PCs from home and Dongyang University, and charges of ignoring the inspection of former Busan City Vice Mayor Jae-soo Yoo, who was separately indicted, were also applied.

In terms of specific charges, there are 12 of them.

As Professor Jeong has already been convicted of some charges of corruption in the entrance examination of his daughter and corruption in private equity funds in the Supreme Court, the issue is how far the court will admit the scope of former Minister Cho’s collusion in this regard.

Former Minister Cho has denied any conspiracy even after Professor Jeong’s conviction.

Earlier in the trial, prosecutors asked former Minister Cho to sentence him to five years in prison and a fine of 12 million won.

[조국 / 전 법무부 장관(지난해 12월) : (3년 만에 재판 마무리했는데 한 말씀만 좀 부탁드리겠습니다.) 잠깐만요. (검찰이 징역 5년 구형했는데 한 말씀만.) ….]

Former professor Jeong, who was again put on trial for corruption in his son’s entrance examination, former Busan Medical Center director Noh Hwan-joong, who was accused of giving bribes, and former civil affairs secretary Baek Won-woo and former anti-corruption secretary Park Hyeong-cheol, who were involved in suspicion of tampering with the inspection, will also be sentenced in the first trial.

As the court in charge was replaced during a court battle that lasted for more than three years, attention is focused on the court’s judgment.
