I did, but the Compliance Committee has been on trial for a very long time now. In fact, it is rare to have a trial for such a long time while only trying to be sentenced. If you look at such things, it would be enough to give Samsung Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong a considerable opportunity and also to impose a probation. There was also an opinion from one side, but in fact, the result did not come out. But you just have to look like this.
If you look at the court now, in addition to judicial judgment, a little political judgment, or narrowing this down, the sentencing judgment is a little inferior to any innocence judgment of the judiciary. So to speak, there was a thought that I would use it here, but nevertheless, it showed a little swaying appearance. Because in fact, it was the court that first recommended the Compliance Committee. However, when the special prosecutors even applied for refusal and the public opinion went badly, in fact, they showed a retreat. The next most regrettable thing is that if they recommended the compliance committee like this, it would be possible to operate properly through the compliance committee. This is a bit more, so transparent management should be done and such a sentence should be made to Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong according to it.In fact, despite the fact that there were many such talks with the Compliance Committee to make various sentencing judgments, the conclusion was also arrest. In this regard, Samsung will be quite dissatisfied.

Therefore, it is unusual for the judge to first talked about the establishment of the Compliance Committee. Rarely does the judge do that. Did you do that specifically for Samsung, and the other thing is, in fact, where did you create the Compliance Committee, was it not by Samsung? But who is this trial targeting? This is for vice chairman Lee Jae-yong. And in reality, Samsung suffered damage. Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong embezzled me and gave me a bribe. Then, the company was damaged, but just because the victim made a compliance committee and keeps it well, it doesn’t mean that vice chairman Lee Jae-yong’s personal corruption is hidden. From that perspective, the role of the Compliance Committee itself seems to be limited, and the court who spoke about it today said this.
It means that even affiliates who have already been handed over to trial because of a crime like Samsung Biologics are not subject to surveillance, according to the regulations of the Compliance Committee. Another is that the Compliance Committee did not include a device to prevent this, even though a method of making a false contract when offering bribes to the President was discovered. In other words, it is less effective. I said that the establishment of the Compliance Committee, that was the court talks about, but when you look at what was actually made, it is not in a situation where you can believe that it can work properly because it is not as effective as the two things that were discussed now . As I said before, it is unusual for the judge to say that they would create a compliance committee, and the compliance committee was created by Samsung. Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong is not. From that point of view, I think that the effectiveness of the Compliance Committee is inevitably controversial.

How do you anticipate the future impact?

When you look at foreign media, Bloomberg and the BBC are writing special stories. As you know, Samsung is the world’s No. 1 smartphone, No. 1 home appliance, and No. 1 memory semiconductor. We had an ambitious plan to make system semiconductors the number one in the world by 2030. In this situation, Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong’s arrest is now news worldwide. Korea has become world-class news due to the arrest of the former president and the vice-chairman of a world-class company has been arrested. It’s a bit sad to see.
Anyway, as Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong was arrested in this way, the future of the world’s No. 1 electronics company became unclear. Somehow, large investments and ambitious plans are bound to take a brake. Therefore, I am showing interest in it globally. Anyway, since Samsung also created a compliance committee and promised transparent management, I hope that the company will be managed well without Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong and even in the absence of vacancy.

It has no choice but to continue. So, as much as possible, of course, Samsung should change well. Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong also hopes to keep the words he said while apologizing. And if it’s legally problematic, you have to get it as punishment and clean it up after it’s all over. The more I keep dragging this, the less helpful it is for Samsung. I think the judges will consider these parts well and judge them well. And Samsung also has to take this opportunity to create an image of a company that really fits the global standard.
Of course, even if you say that a person in power gave pressure and inevitably gave it, it doesn’t fit the global standard.
