The Seoul Central District Court ruled that some of the plaintiffs won a lawsuit for compensation for damages filed by three people, including Choi Sang-yeol, who was framed in the Samrye Nara Super murder case 22 years ago, his family, and the victims’ families.
The total amount of compensation determined is over 1.5 billion won.
Three people, including Mr. Choi, who had been imprisoned, were recognized for compensation ranging from KRW 300 million to KRW 400 million, and from KRW 10 million to KRW 100 million to the family, victims of crime, and survivors.
In particular, the judiciary insisted that Moo Choi, who was an investigative prosecutor at the time, should bear 22% of the total amount of compensation, or 350 million won, with the state.
The Samrye case was a robbery murder in Samrye-eup, Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do in February 1999. At that time, the so-called “Three-member Samrye”, including Mr. Choi, who had intellectual disabilities, were convicted and sentenced to 3 to 6 years in prison by the Supreme Court.
However, when Jinbeom, who was innocent after being investigated by the prosecution at the time, declared conscience in 2015, the three members of the Samrye were found acquitted after a retrial, and subsequently filed a lawsuit against the state and lawyer Choi, asking them to compensate for the damage they suffered from unfair jail.

In today’s court, two of the three members, the victim’s survivors, lawyer Park Joon-young, the legal representative, and one of the real criminals of the case attended.
No one was punished after the statute of limitations in this case had passed, and one of the real criminals came to court in person during the retrial and the course of this compensation lawsuit to testify of the crime he committed and the process of investigation of insolvency at the time.
We also apologized to the victims and their bereaved families in search of the graveyard of the dead grandmother, but we also went to court on the day of the sentence.

None of these were punished. In particular, Choi, who arrested and released the real criminals as a Jeonju District Prosecutor’s Office at the time, even filed a counter lawsuit saying that his reputation had been damaged.
However, the court today dismissed the lawsuit against Choi, as it ruled against the state.
