A new COVID-19 mutation was discovered in Ohio, USA, different from the one that first appeared in Britain and South Africa.
CNBC and ABC announced on the 13th local time that researchers at the Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University discovered two new mutant viruses.
One mutant virus, found in only one of these patients, contains the same genetic mutation as the British mutant virus, but “it appears to have occurred in a virus species that already existed in the United States,” the researchers explained.
One other mutation has already been shown to have spread widely between the end of last month and three weeks in Columbus, the capital of Ohio.
In particular, the’Columbus mutation’ is reported to have three different gene mutations that have not been observed at once in previous coronaviruses.
“The new mutation has the same genetic backbone as the virus that preceded it,” said Dan Jones, vice president of molecular pathology at Ohio State University, who led the study. “The three mutations show significant evolution.”
The newly discovered mutant virus, like the British and South African outbreaks, is highly contagious, but there is no evidence yet to suggest that the vaccine may be less effective, the researchers added.
