The German government has said it will not rule out further sanctions against Russia in connection with a ruling by a Russian court on opposition activist Alexey Navalni on Wednesday, the Reuters news agency reported.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert said at a press conference today that when asked whether they are considering new sanctions against Russia, the EU has already imposed sanctions after a poisonous attack on Navalni.
A spokesman for Seibert added that Germany will discuss further measures with EU member states.
The Russian court sentenced Navalni to three years and six months in prison the day before.
Western countries, including Germany, Europe, and the United States, criticized Navalni for immediate release.
