It is also a year of losses, crises and deaths for the film world
–
2020 was a year of unprecedented crises. The world was stunned by the corona epidemic. When 2020 was robbed of celebrations, crowds and festivals, it brought a lot of losses and crises to the film world.
Forty-five films have been released this year. With the closure of theaters in mid-March following Kovid, even the films that were about to be released were forced to extend their release to 2021. It is a relief to the film lovers that there are some of the best films in Malayalam that can record 2020 despite the Kovid crisis. Films like Ayyappan and Koshy, Trance, Fifth Pathira, See You Soon, Groom Wanted, and Kappela have attracted a lot of attention both artistically and commercially.
‘Ayyappan and Koshy’, directed by Sachi, was a box office hit and marked 2020. The film, which hit theaters on February 7, was a commercial success. Another proud thing is that the remake rights of the film have been sold to Tamil and Telugu languages as well.

The release of big budget films like ‘Marakkar: The Lion of the Arabian Sea’ has been in limbo since the Kovid era. Audiences are waiting for these big movies to hit theaters in 2021 though. This is the first time that the theaters have been closed for a long time, even though they were closed before the floods. The lockdown period has adversely affected a large number of industries, including theater owners, employees, producers and distributors.
Step change to OTD
With the closure of theaters, we have seen the film world take advantage of the potential of OTT platforms. Sufi and Sujatha, Maniyarayil Asokan, Seo Soon, Halal Love Story and many more films ran on the platforms and reached the audience. Among them, Fahadh starred in ‘See You Soon’. This experimental film, which seeks to turn the limitations into positive ones, is one of the most talked about among film critics.
2020 without film festival
The saddest thing for film critics is that the Kerala International Film Festival was not held this year in the Malayalee’s cinema calendar. In the context of Kovid, this year’s fair has been extended to February. Concerns and ambiguities about the conduct of the film festival still persist, as there is no cause for concern about the virus.
2020 of Deaths
2020 was the year of the death march. 2020 is the year when many talents are lost not only in the field of art and literature, but also in the world of cinema. Everything from Kovid to mental problems led to the untimely demise of all these stars. Director Sachi, Korean director Kim Ki Dook, Ravi Vallathol and Saudi Gracie have all said goodbye to 2020.
