ZZS will lead the initiative to establish a parliamentary commission of inquiry to evaluate the government’s Covid-19 decisions

The Saeima faction and board of the Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) have supported the initiative of Saeima deputy Viktoris Valainis (ZZS) to establish a parliamentary inquiry commission to evaluate the government’s decisions in the Covid-19 crisis.

As Valainis told LETA, ZZS plans to address both the opposition and coalition members with a call to support the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry commission.

The Satversme stipulates that the support of at least 34 deputies of the Saeima is required to promote the initiation of the establishment of a parliamentary investigation commission. ZZS Saeima faction has 10 deputies.

Earlier on social networks, Valainis pointed out that the board of the party he represented – the Latvian Farmers’ Union (LZS) – had supported the deputy’s initiative to establish a parliamentary commission of inquiry to evaluate the government’s decisions regarding Covid-19 restriction, vaccine procurement and other related issues or failures, “Which have led to tragic consequences”.

The politician told LETA that ZZS had encouraged Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņi (JV) to engage in an external, independent investigation into the “current chaos”. The political force submitted such an initiative as a draft decision of the Saeima. Such an invitation has not been heard, but Valainis positively assesses the investigation carried out by journalists, according to which the Ministry of Health “had to decide” to organize another internal investigation.

On Friday, we learned that the failures identified so far are not everything, because Latvia has previously refused to purchase additional “Moderna” vaccines, the politician noted.

Valainis said the parliamentary inquiry should assess both government decisions on the Covid-19 vaccine acquisition and acquisition problems, “emergency procurement” and other issues. The deputy stressed that a great many people have died after contracting Covid-19.

Valainis pointed out that he has information about unpublished or less pronounced procurements, including public relations contracts, which raise questions. Negotiations with other politicians on the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry commission have not yet started.
