Watering can picnic with music and slapstick

Pouring (son). When you turn ten, you want your children’s birthday party to be colorful, happy, entertaining, with lots of laughter and music. It’s a time together that flies by and you’d like to stay longer – even if your parents are already standing in the door and want to take you home with them. Some visitors to the picnic for the tenth birthday of the watering can museum may have felt that way too – the two hours on the banks of the swan pond passed far too quickly.

The audience had made themselves comfortable on picnic blankets, benches and garden chairs on the riverside square in front of the THM and was welcomed in a very personal way by comedian Georg Schweitzer as soon as they arrived: Moderately disrespectful with a crazy talent for improvisation and always in a good mood. Ingke Günther and Jörg Wagner from the gardener duties had invited a very special moderator in the form of the Karlsruhe comedian. An absolute stroke of luck. With almost inexhaustible puns, situation comedy and quick-wittedness, he provided brilliant entertainment. “I have never let anyone throw me off my feet so wonderfully”, Ingke Günther will be delighted at the end of the picnic.

Together with Jörg Wagner from the gardener duties, Günther had distributed ten cool boxes on the forecourt. Each had a special story about the museum’s extraordinary exhibits. Because anyone who thought the watering can was a banal object was taught better. Hard facts were waiting in the first box: You learned that you can admire exactly 1499 jug exhibits on the museum’s website, 800 pieces are on display in the museum. “There are 192 metal jugs and 127 children’s jugs,” said Günther. The museum had 4690 visitors in 2019 and it is the only watering can museum in the world.

In other boxes there were stories about jugs from the GDR that were misused by the Stasi for espionage purposes, jugs for Kneipp cures, jugs for boys or jugs that are given away especially by mothers-in-law. It seemed like there was no story (s) without a watering can.

In terms of music, the gardener duties had invited another duo. Mr. Petermann and Nana Centraal alias Peter Herrmann and Manuela Weichenrieder knew how to translate the relaxed atmosphere into equally relaxed and excellent music.

The birthday was a pleasure and we wish the watering can museum that it does not grow up so quickly and celebrate many more festivals like this one.

Anyone who has not yet been to the watering can museum, by the way, can do so: The museum has been located at Sonnenstrasse 3 for four years. Further information on the opening times can be found on the giesskannenmuseum.de.
