This year, the Latvian National Cultural Center received eight applications to supplement the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICM) values. Taking into account the current situation in the country, LNKC will not hold a public ceremony of presenting the values of the NKM list this time, but the applicants for the values included in the list will be honored separately.

“Intangible cultural heritage is skills and knowledge, as well as traditions and customs that a certain community or group considers to be an important element of their identity,” said Gita Lancere, LNKC’s intangible cultural heritage expert.

“I invite you to look closely around you – what is the intangible heritage of your family, parish, county. Maybe it can add to the list of Latvia’s Intangible Cultural Heritage? ”

The list of NKM, which currently includes 24 values, is envisaged by the Law on Intangible Cultural Heritage adopted at the end of 2016. With the help of this regulation, the environment and conditions necessary for purposeful support for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage are created.

LNKC announces the acceptance of new applications at the beginning of January each year. The decision on inclusion is made by the NKM Council, which includes both researchers and representatives of universities and county NGOs, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and Science, as well as delegated representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development and the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO.
