Bécancour industrial commissioner Julie Boulet called for this meeting last week when concerns were raised about the substance and the process of the future plant.
It is a finished product that will leave the factory. It is not a product that will be resold or sent to other partners, companies under the same brand
, assures Julie Boulet. She said she was reassured by the information provided by the company during the meeting which lasted 90 minutes.
Anonymous sources close to the case had expressed their fears about the new version of Nemaska Lithium. These people feared the company would produce lithium carbonate, a much more polluting substance.
A new less polluting process
The change in process mentioned by the member for CAQ
in Nicolet-Bécancour, Donald Martel, interviewed on the show Always in the morning Friday therefore does not affect the finished product. The company even claims that the process would be more ecological than that initially planned in Shawinigan. The objective is to optimize the process compared to what was planned in the initial project
, says Donald Martel. He adds that large projects like Nemaska Lithium are subject to several environmental assessment procedures.
The deputy believes that anonymous sources have malicious intentions
towards the project.
Nemaska Lithium did not respond to our interview requests for more details on this new process. Julie Boulet claims to have advised the management of the company to make themselves more available to journalists.
