The number of infections with the coronavirus in Ecuador has passed 30,000. There are now 31,881 cases known and the death toll is at least at 1569. In addition, a further 1336 deaths are known in which a corona infection is suspected.
According to the government, the actual number of deaths is probably much higher. In the country’s largest city, Guayaquil in particular, the death toll is expected to rise sharply. The health care system in the city has recently become so overloaded that bodies of deceased corona patients in homes and on the street stayed put.
The government has since announced that the corona measures in the country are being gradually relaxed. For example, some companies are allowed to return home and more taxis are allowed to drive again. The borders will remain closed for the time being and the curfew that applies now remains in force.
