Production of fifth-generation sedans and station wagons will stop next year. Ford has confirmed this information and officially announced that it will say goodbye to one of its longest-running lines – Mondeo, which has been down the assembly line for 29 years. Against the background of the growing popularity of crossovers, the production of sedans and station wagons in Europe will be stopped in March 2022.
As a representative of the American company explained to Autocar, one of the reasons for the forthcoming abandonment of the Mondeo model is “a change in customer preferences.” Last year, crossovers accounted for 39 percent of all Fords sold, and their share rose eight percent during the year.
The second reason is the readjustment of the European line, which the company intends to switch entirely to electric traction by 2030. In February Ford announcements a mysterious model that could be the successor to the Mondeo. So far, the company has revealed only the silhouette of the car, which could be an electric crossover.
It is expected to be called Evos and will be a plug-in hybrid powered by a 2.5-liter engine. The premiere of the innovation will take place before the end of 2021. Earlier in the Ford documentation, we found information about another possible successor to the Mondeo. According to these data, the name will be retained and given to a new model – a station wagon with a huge screen in the salon, whose pre-production prototype has already been photographed by photo spies in China.
It will be recalled that the Ford Mondeo came on the market in 1993 and became one of the key global models of the American brand. The model was at the peak of its popularity in 2001, but with the change in global trends towards SUVs, the demand for Mondeo began to decline systematically. Only 2,400 units were sold last year.
