Golden Dragons secure first win in GFL2

With the support of a hundred fans who had traveled with them, the Dragons initially managed to dominate the first quarter of the game. While the hosts were still struggling with coordination problems, the Dragons were able to set important accents in the first quarter and twice brought the ball into the end zone. First, AJ Springer threw a pass to wide receiver Erich Heinz and a few minutes later to Matt Laur. Both additional points were confidently converted by kicker Peter Hoppe. So the Dragons went into the second quarter with a score of 14:0.

This should then become more balanced than at the beginning. The Pirates were able to connect with a touchdown pass to the score of 07:14. However, the answer from Giessen followed promptly. Erich Heinz was able to fight his way through to the end zone of the Pirates at the subsequent kick off as a return to 21:07 for the Dragons. This was followed by a long offensive drive from the hosts, which should also be rewarded with points. But then it was Giessen who scored again with a pass to Matt Laur at halftime of 28:14.

The Dragons wanted to avoid a break after the break like in the first game of the season. And so they went full throttle again right after the restart. Directly in the first drive, AJ Springer threw a perfect pass to Matt Laur to make the score 34:14. And it wasn’t long before Erich Heinz was able to carry the ball back into the end zone. But the hosts didn’t think about giving up either, continued to fight defiantly and were able to close the gap to 21:40 with another touchdown. For the final result of 47:21 from the point of view of the Dragons, a nice run by Anthony Dixon into the end zone finally ensured.

Head coach Michael Anderl was satisfied with his team’s performance, as this victory is an important step towards staying up in the league. Defensive coordinator Cordell Shepard is also proud of his defense, although he still sees work to be done: ” We allowed some unnecessary touchdowns on defense. We want to work on that and prepare for the next game.”. And in the next game, of all people, the favorite for the title and co-promoters, the Ingolstadt Dukes, will come to the TSG stadium at home. “This will be a completely different game. We want to be as prepared as possible for that.” says head coach Michael Anderl. The Dragons now have a weekend without a game before it continues on June 11, 2022 in the TSG Wieseck stadium.
