In Germany, a 56-year-old man has been sentenced to two years in prison by the Berlin Supreme Court for spying on behalf of the Russian military intelligence service GRU.
In 2017, the accused recorded 385 documents on the CD with plans of the buildings used by the Bundestag and sent the CD, presiding judge Andreas Millers said on Thursday.
“However, this is not a matter of state secrecy,” the judge explained.
The accused Treasury will have to pay 15,000 euros.
A resident of Potsdam has worked for a company hired by the Bundestag to inspect “portable electronic equipment”.
The company has received building plans for the work, including a security check of printers and lamps.
The accused knew that these plans were not generally available. True, they were not secret either.
The accused sent a CD with documents to the employees of the Russian Embassy in Berlin, without giving the sender’s name.
This embassy employee has worked for GRU.
The accused was once an officer in the National People’s Army in the German Democratic Republic.
By recording and sending the plans, he acted on his own initiative and free of charge, the court found. His motive has not yet been clarified.
