[코로나19]First domestic confirmation of cat corona infection

View larger– Cats who were confirmed to have a novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) are believed to have been infected at the International Prayer Center in Jinju City, Gyeongnam, where the outbreak occurred. According to the quarantine authorities on the 24th, it was confirmed that one of the two mothers and two babies raised by mother and daughter at the prayer center was infected with Corona 19 on the 21st. An official from the quarantine authorities said, “No diagnostic test is usually performed on companion animals, but when all the guardians’ family members were confirmed, the test was conducted in the process of finding another place to leave and I know that it was positive.”

In addition, Jo-Yeol Jo, a professor at Seoul National University School of Veterinary Medicine, disclosed a suspected case of infection in a dog. It was confirmed through a rapid antigen diagnosis test for animals on the 19th, two days before the cat was confirmed by the International Prayer Center. The breed is a male French bulldog, and the owner is known to have been confirmed on the 17th. The dog was in an animal hospital in the Gyeonggi area. Professor Cho confirmed the infection with an animal diagnostic kit developed by a Seoul National University venture company he is representing. The diagnostic kit has been approved for clinical trials by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. On the 25th, it is planned to confirm the infection of the dog through a formal diagnostic test (PCR).

View larger-Overseas, many cases of animal corona 19 infection have been reported since the beginning of last year. According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (DMI), as of November 20 last year, the number of animal infection cases reported to the International Waters Office was 456 cases in 19 countries on four continents. There are 6 types of infected animals, including dogs, cats, tigers, lions, pumas, and minks. The animal with the most corona 19 infection was mink, and 321 outbreaks occurred in 7 countries including Denmark (216 cases) and the Netherlands (67 cases). The next most infected animals are cats (72 cases) and dogs (52 cases). The only suspected case of transmission from animals to humans occurred in mink. The World Health Organization (WHO) said that since June 2020, until recently, 214 people in Denmark alone are suspected of being infected from mink. A special variant of the virus was also identified in 12 of them. However, in the remaining cases, including pets such as dogs and cats, there was no case of suspicion of transmission to humans. Sohn Young-rae, head of the Social Strategy Division, Central Accident Control Headquarters, said on the day that “the world has not yet confirmed cases of infection from companion animals to humans.” However, there is no guidance on how to deal with pet infections, so confusion is a concern. The domestic companion animal population is known to be about 15 million. Kim Woo-joo, a professor of infectious medicine at Korea University’s Guro Hospital, said, “There have been no measures to test or quarantine the companion animal of the confirmed patient. We need to create relevant guidelines.” In the future, the quarantine authorities will work with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to prepare guidelines for diagnostic testing and quarantine of animals in contact with corona19 confirmed cases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) should avoid contact with domestic animals and wild animals as well as pets if they are suspected of being a confirmed case. It is recommended that you have to consult first. According to the Agency for Disease Control and Prevention, animals with COVID-19 showed symptoms similar to humans, such as shortness of breath, cough, runny nose, and asymptomatic. Experts especially emphasized that animals suspected of infection should never be abandoned. [email protected]Go to reporter page>Reporter Kim So-young and Kim Seong-gyu
