TB Patients Cough Can Contain More Than 10 Thousand Bacteria: Okezone Lifestyle

DISEASE TB or Tuberculosis became the first infectious disease in Indonesia. TB has been around for a long time and continues to infect people today.

TB itself is a disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. These bacteria attack a person’s body in the respiratory system, so the symptoms often shown by TB patients are cough, in addition to fever and night sweats.

The Director for Prevention and Control of Direct Communicable Diseases, Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), Dr. Wiendra Waworuntu, M.Kes explained, said that another symptom commonly shown by TB patients is a drastic weight loss in a short time.

“This symptom can be an early sign of someone experiencing TB. Of course, laboratory diagnosis is the main thing in establishing the diagnosis,” he said at the virtual press conference for the Ayo TOSS TBC campaign initiated by the Ministry of Health and PT Johnson and Johnson Indonesia, Thursday (13/8/2020 ).

Wiendra also explained that TB patients who cough are quite easy to transmit the bacteria to people around them, especially if they do not apply cough etiquette properly or do not wear masks. Yes, once a TB patient coughs, he or she sheds more than 10,000 TB bacteria and therefore allows 10 to 15 people direct exposure.

Therefore, the use of masks for TB patients is a mandatory thing that must be done. Not only that, when you are taking off your mask for some reason, make sure when coughing you do cough etiquette properly.

TB patients and their families must be educated so that the spread of disease bacteria can be prevented properly. “Do not discriminate against tuberculosis patients. They can still do their usual activities as long as they take drugs until they recover, which can last from 6 months to 24 months in RO TB patients,” added Wiendra.
