Real Madrid finished in the Champions League, eliminated by the Citizens. Juventus also failed

The Manchester City and Lyon footballers will play in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. It was decided by Friday’s retaliatory eight-final matches.

Both duels were won by the home teams 2: 1. But what was enough for the whole of England against Real Madrid after the initial win in the same proportion, it was not enough for the Italian big club in the measurement with Lyon. Juventus did not score on the French club. The two advancing teams will compete together in the quarterfinals.

The Champions League was played for the first time since March 11 and returned after a coronavirus break after almost five months. Due to measures against the spread of covid-19, spectators are not allowed in the auditorium. The remaining two eight-final rematches are scheduled for Saturday, and from the quarterfinals onwards, the competition will be completed by a tournament system for one match on neutral soil in Portugal.

Ronaldo was not enough for everything alone

Juventus had to make up for the loss from the first duel and quickly collected the shortfall instead of compensating. Bentancur was the first to hit the ball, but referee Zwayer ordered a penalty against the home team. Following the example of the Czech legend Antonín Panenka, Depay chose Dloubáček to the middle of the goal and in the 12th minute he sent Lyon to a surprising lead.

The Italian champion also equalized from the penalty kick into the break. During Pjanič’s standard, he cut the ball for Depay’s hand and Ronaldo did not hesitate from another questionable penalty. He sent the goalkeeper to the opposite side.

After an hour of play, the Portuguese gunner turned the situation around. From behind the lime sent a tough shot, which bounced off the goalkeeper Lopes into the bar and into the net. Ronaldo scored the 130th goal in the Champions League and again improved his record in the competition. In the round of 16, he scored 25 goals.

In the 76th minute, the 35-year-old striker was able to complete a hat-trick and score a progressive goal, but his head aimed over. Immediately, the guests demanded in vain additional penalties as well as on the opposite side of the home.

The final onslaught of Juventus did not change the situation, and Ronaldo will not lead to the coveted triumph in the Champions League even in the second season after coming from Real “The Old Lady”. Lyon became the first French team to eliminate Juventus in UEFA competitions and can look forward to the first LM quarterfinals of the 2009/10 season.

Varane had a bad evening

Real was missing Captain Ramos for a card penalty, and another Real stopper, Varane Manchester, gave the lead in the ninth minute. Jesus took it for the ball and Sterling easily opened the score to an open goal. He scored a fast for City in a competitive match.

Real needed to score two goals at that moment to catch up with the match, at least for extra time. Benzema had a hard time on the waterlogged pitch – his trademark technique was nowhere in sight today.

The guests were then held back by the goalkeeper Courtois with two interventions, but in the middle of the second act, Varane “sunk” them again with his second mistake in the match. His shot came in from the right hand side but Gabriel Jesus managed to save it with an unbelievable reaction stop. He followed up with a goal from the opening duel. The new Spanish champion will not add another triumph in the Champions League to his record 13 championships this year.
