Van Ranst now warns the figures for our country are more stable …

The number of new infections with the corona virus is stabilizing. Virologist Marc Van Ranst warns, however. “The epidemic is on the increase in many municipalities,” he says.

In the period between July 27 and August 2, an average of 530.9 people a day became infected with the corona virus in our country. That average is lower than yesterday. There are 49 percent more infections than a week ago, according to the most recent update from health institute Sciensano.

Compared to the past few days, the number of new infections seems to be stabilizing. Yesterday and the day before yesterday, the seven-day averages were 537 and 528 infections, respectively.

“We do not yet know how long and how high this wave will be, but we are confident that with our joint efforts we can get this wave under control,” said Sciensano in an explanation to the figures. “The basic rules work and we have to apply them consistently.” This involves limiting social contacts, keeping distance, and quarantining immediately in case of infection.

Virologist Marc Van Ranst asks for vigilance on Twitter. “We are now eight days after the implementation of the recent measures. We see that Antwerp is moving in the right direction and so the figures for Belgium are stabilizing. But in other cities / municipalities the epidemic is still increasing. Watch out! ‘

The averages

Return to the numbers. Over the last fourteen days, an average of 54 inhabitants per 100,000 were infected, an increase of 198 percent compared to the previous period.

The past week, an average of 24 people a day were hospitalized with covid-19, an increase of 35 percent in a week. An average of 3 patients died of the virus every day, an increase of 31 percent on a weekly basis.

In total, at least 71,158 people in Belgium have already been infected with the corona virus. The number of deaths has risen to 9,859.

On Wednesday, Crisis Center spokesman Yves Stevens warned to pay sufficient attention to measures against the spread of Covid-19, despite the heat wave.
