A318 and VIP flight out: British Airways separates from Baby-Airbus

The British airline had a very special Airbus A318. He only flew 32 passengers from London to New York. Now the plane and the offer disappear.

It’s a hidden farewell announcement that doesn’t appear in any press release. On page 31 of the documents for the half-year figures of British Airways parent IAG it is in a table: “Exiting A318 fleet”, the end of the Airbus A318 fleet.

In fact, this A318 fleet consists of just one British Airways aircraft. The Airbus A318-100 with the registration G-EUNA was delivered in August 2009 and is therefore eleven years to the month. In the wake of the Corona crisis, British Airways took the plane out of service in March and parked it in Madrid.

Only 32 business class seats

A very special flight disappears with the last A318. Because G-EUNA does not have Economy Class, but only 32 Business Class seats. He flew with flight numbers BA1 and BA2 as a pure business class flight from London City Airport via Shannon to New York JFK and back. The airline writes on its website about the “exclusive business class service that transports you between the financial centers of London and New York”: “It is as if you have your own private jet.”

So far, the plan was to resume flights in September. But now the exclusive offer is no longer available. “As we anticipate the decline in passenger demand as a result of the global Covid-19 pandemic, we can confirm that we will no longer operate our business-only flights from London City to New York JFK via Shannon,” said a British -Airways spokeswoman for the portal Aerotime.

Flight numbers belonged to the Concorde

It is not yet clear which aircraft will fly with flight numbers BA1 / BA2 in the future. The Concorde used to fly between London Heathrow and New York JFK.
