Rivera Schatz will request the withdrawal of the measure that would create the Coastal Corridor in Manati

The President of the Senate, Thomas Rivera sweetheart, announced today, Sunday, that it will request the withdrawal of the Senate project 1643, which would create the Manati Coastal Corridor, after opposition from various environmental sectors, including that of the mayor Jesus Sanchez.

In short, the legislation would reduce environmental protection in places like Mar Chiquita, Tortuguero Lagoon, Palmas Beaches and Hacienda La Esperanza, according to environmental experts.

“Tomorrow, Monday, June 29, we will be requesting the return of the P. del S. 1643 to be canceled and thus put an end to the controversy created with that project,” Rivera Schatz said in a Facebook post.

“In this way, the P. del S. 1643 will not be converted into law, nor will it have any effect on the current legal circumstances of Mar Chiquita,” he added.

The measure was approved Thursday in the House of Representatives, but no public hearings were held to measure the consequences it would bring.

Likewise, after an attempt by former Governor Ricardo Rosselló Nevares to eliminate the protection of the natural reserve of Mar Chiquita, as well as other eight lands on the island – in November 2019, the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico determined that the Planning Board violated the law by voiding seven resolutions to protect various nature reserves throughout the island.
