Pomegranate is a low-sugar fruit, as it does not cause an increase in sugar levels in people with diabetes. It is one of the fruits with a low glycemic index, and half a cup of pomegranate seeds contains approximately 16 grams of beneficial carbohydrates.
Some studies have also shown that antioxidant compounds found in pomegranates help lower blood sugar levels during fasting in patients with type 2 diabetes, but a more recent review ruled out this.
Pomegranate juice and its extracts also significantly reduce blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity.
